Cathryn Michon is the rarest of showbiz creatures, a female Writer/Director/Actor in a mainstream romantic comedy.  In the tradition of Lena Dunham, she mined  her own insecurities, and cruelly photographed her own fat, to create a hilarious and relatable comedy about the insanity of female body image in our photoshop culture.

“I care so much about telling authentic women’s stories, I put my fat on a movie poster. I’m using my fat for good and not evil,” says Michon.  “This is a story about a normal woman, with normal insecurities. The kind of woman mainstream showbiz likes to pretend doesn’t exist.”

Michon notes in a recent survey, 96 of 100 women say they have at least one bad thought about their body every day.  She adds, “Those other four women are liars or in a coma.” She continues, “not since ‘Bridget Jones’ Diary’ has Hollywood comedy even thought about addressing the body issues most women struggle with daily.”

The message of Muffin Top? “Love yourself now, not 5 pounds from now.”

The film stars a veritable overflowing muffin top of comedy talent including David Arquette (Scream) Retta (Parks and Recreation) Dot Marie Jones (Glee) Marissa Jaret Winokur (Hairspray) Maria Bamford (Arrested Development) Diedrich Bader (Napoleon Dynamite) Melissa Peterman (Baby Daddy) and recently passed comedy legend Marcia Wallace (The Simpsons).

In Muffin Top, Women’s Studies Prof Suzanne (Cathryn Michon) is dumped by her husband (Diedrich Bader) for a younger, thinner co-worker (Haylie Duff). She then has a body fat shame spiral most women will recognize. She makes disastrous choices, including botched plastic surgery, and ultimately becomes a more authentic person. Only by loving and standing up for herself does she find the love she seeks.

Love hurts, cake helps.

Only 15% of Hollywood movies have women in lead roles, and only 4% are directed by women. Hence, Michon founded Surprise Hit Films, which makes movies with speaking cast that is half women, since half of movie ticket buyers are women.

“In Hollywood, when a movie featuring women does well, the industry says it, ‘over-performed,’ and proclaims it a, ‘surprise hit!’ Our goal is to just go ahead and let women talk in the movies and have surprise hits every time,” says Michon.
