Squeaky Clean: How To Look After Your Teeth

Squeaky Clean: How To Look After Your Teeth

They’re small, white and shaped like chisels but unless they’re causing us pain we rarely think about how important they are. On a daily basis, we use our teeth to chew food, breaking it down into little bite-size chunks that are easier for us to swallow, as well as using them to pronounce certain sounds when talking. Our teeth also help to give our face structure which is most noticeable when illuminated by a lovely, healthy smile.

However, our teeth can be problematic, clever as they are they, unfortunately, lack the ability to heal themselves. But, by following these quick tips you’ll be not only be keeping your teeth strong, healthy and white but reduce the number of trips you make to the dentist’s office!

Basic Brushing

Even though we’re taught how to brush our teeth as children many people are still doing it incorrectly, or are skipping brushing at night altogether. Brushing your teeth regularly, i.e. morning and night is vital for maintaining good dental health as it helps to remove plaque. Plaque is a sticky, thin film of bacteria that falls on, and between your teeth. Over time, if brushing doesn’t occur, plaque can harden into something called tartar, a thick, yellow substance that if formed near the gum line leads to irritated, bleeding gums that can then develop into gum disease.

By brushing your teeth properly you can significantly reduce the risk of gum disease which, if left untreated can rot teeth and destroy the jaw bone. To brush your teeth correctly, you should move your brush in small, round circles making sure to brush each tooth evenly, on both the outside and the inside as well cleaning your tongue to remove bacteria and help to keep your mouth fresh.

Choose Your Toothpaste Carefully

Your toothpaste should contain something called Fluoride which helps to strengthen and protect teeth which reduces the risk of tooth decay, infections, gum disease and other issues. Fluoride toothpaste is common and inexpensive with many products containing whitening ingredients that remove stubborn stains. There’s also toothpaste for sensitive teeth that offer extra protection and those labeled as ‘total care’ which help to freshen breath, fight plaque and reduce gum disease all in one tube. You should also aim to replace your toothbrush every three months as gradually the interdental bristles can lose their effect and soft ones will not brush your teeth properly!

Watch Your Sugar Intake

Dentists are fighting a non-stop war against unhealthy sweets, chocolate, and fizzy drinks. Why? Because sugary food tends to produce a lot of plaque, natural sugars also contain acids that eventually start to attack the tooth enamel leading to little, or quite big, holes called cavities- that’s why we refer to their treatment as a filling. Check out what dentists are in your area by visiting www.dentista.24hora.org, where you’ll find lots of local 24-hour dental clinics that’ll perform pain-free, quick and easy fillings. Tooth decay doesn’t happen overnight but once it starts it can take hold quickly which is why it’s important to make sure you’re regularly removing plaque.

Flossing Is Fun

Dental floss is a fragile, almost transparent spool of nylon, or plastic tape used to remove plaque and food debris from between the teeth. Due to its thin yet sturdy structure floss can get right towards those back teeth that your toothbrush struggles to reach. Dental floss is also useful for making sure you have no food left that could cause gum disease but do make sure that you’re flossing correctly as it can damage your gums otherwise.

Don’t Dodge The Dentist

Regular dental check-ups, around every six months, are necessary as we can’t always see everything that’s going on in our mouths. A dentist will easily be able to check the health of our teeth via a quick check up as well as spot any early signs of decay, or any other issue that needs treatment. They may offer you a routine scale and polish, which removes stubborn plaque and gives teeth a thorough cleaning.

Not everyone enjoys going to the dentist, so if that’s the case let them know you’re nervous, a good dentist will talk you through any treatment, ask if you’re ok at regular intervals and try to keep any invasive equipment at a minimum. Finally, don’t be embarrassed by the state of your teeth as your dentist will have seen much worse and it often isn’t as bad as we think.
