Health and Fitness Tips for Busy Students

It can be easy when you are busy studying to fall into bad habits, especially if you are studying a demanding higher education course like a masters in social work online. There are probably many great reasons you chose to continue your education, but don’t forget how important health and fitness are. Getting into great habits now will make it much easier to continue a healthy lifestyle once you graduate. If you don’t, you could risk a lifetime of problems with your physical and mental health.

Walk

Walking is a really easy way to keep fit. And, it’ll save you money. Walk to where you need to be. If you are studying online, such as an online MSW, there might be days where you sit working all day. Give yourself a break and go for a walk. As well as getting some exercise, it’ll help you feel refreshed and alert, keeping your concentration levels up.

Drink Water

Drinking eight glasses of water a day is great for both your body and mind. It’s very easy to become dehydrated without even realizing it. Our bodies are made of huge amounts of water, so your brain functions better when its water levels are topped up. Being full of water will also reduce the temptation to indulge in unhealthy snacks.

Cook

It can be difficult to find the time to cook when you are busy. But, there are some fantastic meals you can make in less than 30 minutes. Cooking from scratch means you know exactly what goes into your meals, so you can fill them with healthy ingredients.

Eat Healthy Snacks

Snacks such as fruits, nuts, and organic nut butter are very healthy and can give you a great energy boost during the day without the comedown you’d get with a sugary snack. If you are going out, pack these snacks to take with you so you don’t have to buy something unhealthy on the go where there is less choice.

Exercise

While walking is great, try to get some cardio exercise. 30 minutes of exercise, three times a week, is perfect. Running is a brilliant exercise if you are short on time, as you don’t need to go anywhere special to do it, just head out your front door. If you haven’t run much before, try a couch to 5k program to get you started.

Swimming is one of the best all over body exercises and the reduced pressure on your joints means it suits those who are very unfit or have injuries.

Sleep

Sleep is often neglected when we are busy. While it may not be possible to get eight hours every night, try when you can. Turn the computer off and relax for an hour before bed. If you can’t sleep, at least make sure you are resting. Afternoon naps are a fantastic way to top up your sleep if you’ve had a late night. Remember, sleep is your bodies chance to recover from the day; neglect it for too long and you could become ill.

Developing great habits now will see you lead a much healthier life. Try to find an exercise you enjoy and healthy meals you love. You are much more likely to stick to things that make you happy.
