5 Must-Have Smart Home Devices You Should Adopt in 2017

Remember when we thought it was amazing that our outdoor lights would turn on automatically at dusk? Or when smart TVs revolutionized television by letting us record our shows and watch them later?

Ten years ago we would have labeled these innovations as “smart” technology. But in the past few years, the term has taken on explosive new definitions as new products are launched. A smart home is generally defined as an interconnected array of devices — lighting, appliances, security systems, entertainment systems and heating and cooling systems — controlled through a central hub such as a tablet or phone.

According to Raconteur, smart home technology will be a $100 billion market by 2018. Whether you are looking for a single smart device or an interconnected system, these are the five must-haves for 2017:

Systems

Most home automation products work with a variety of systems. But if you are looking for a home automation system that basically does everything, ADT Pulse is the best all-inclusive home automation product. Pulse works with Nest products, such as their thermostat, but also helps you control your appliances, your lights, lock and unlock your doors, and arm and disarm your home security system. You can integrate motion detectors, video cameras and control all of it from your smartphone or tablet. You can even answer your door remotely (with Ring), giving the appearance that you are home even when you aren’t. Unlike other home systems, ADT provides 24/7 support, sending emergency aid to your home when the situation arises.  Check out Fast Keys they have a number of different security products for you to look through if you’re interested in keeping your home extra secure take a look.

Lighting

Edison would be jealous if he knew how fun and easy lighting has become. The Philips Hue A19 starter kit is the best choice hands-down for Apple users because you can sync the bulbs to movies and music with a dizzying array of 16 million colors. Other starter kits (without the color variation bulbs) are available to work on a variety of platforms such as Amazon Echo and Google Home.

Thermostat

The Nest Thermostat learns your habits — when you’re home, when you’re not, what temperature you like to keep it at when you sleep. It creates a schedule based on you and your family, and because you’re only using the AC or heat when you need it, it also helps you save energy. One of the best parts of Nest is that it pairs with devices like Google Home, Wemo and Skybell, all working together to make your house smarter.

Outlets

There’s a dizzying array of smart outlets on the market which all make regular appliances — coffee makers, lamps or clocks — smart. iHome’s smart plug doesn’t have a lot of bells and whistles, but it does work well with a variety of platforms and has excellent voice control with an Android or Apple device. Better still, the current version of their app lets you group like devices together, such as lighting, in a particular room or a set of appliances.

While there are plenty of smart home devices on the market, these are a few of the must-haves you should adopt this year.
